Souper Bowl Round-Up 2015

Souper Bowl Round-Up 2015

My husband says he won the lottery when he married me because, much to his delight, I am a big football fan, but I’m not just a football fan; I enjoy all sports.   I eat up March Madness, Grand Slam tennis tournaments, World Series, NBA Championships, Olympics both winter and summer.  There are plenty of games to go around.  I might be called a fair weather fan since I mostly tend to tune in to end-of-season games with relish while not paying that close attention to regular season games.  There’s just not enough time in the day for that.  Besides I have my own kid’s sports to attend.   I keep up with sports news by listening to sports radio on my drives around town, like Dan Patrick and Scott Van Pelt.  We watch plenty of ESPN SportsCenter around here.  I even have the SportsCenter app on my phone with it’s characteristic ring tone that lets me know when something earth shattering requires my absolute attention.

The Super Bowl is a fun time; we watch the game and the commercials, but I don’t live and die by it.  I applaud great effort and believe me, I know what great effort these athletes devote to their trade as all of our four oldest children have played their sport at the college level, which is difficult enough.  This year, the Patriots will play the Seahawks.  Although our Boston-born daughter-in-law supports her local team with gusto, I really admire Russell Wilson, the quarterback for Seattle.  He is a humble guy with a strong focus on team, not self.  He serves kids in the community, speaks respectfully of his father who passed away in 2010; I root for him.  Other members of his team are flashier, flying much higher on the PR radar shall we say, which honestly turns me off.

We’ll put together a little spread of tasty morsels for the game, including a big pot of soup.  We might add some kind of bread like Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls, a dip like Artichoke Spinach Dip with Bacon or Simple Nine Layer Dip, a salad like Spinach, Pear and Walnut Salad with Tarragon Dressing or Apple Carrot Salad with Poppyseed Dressing , and a dessert bar like Brookie Bars or Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars.  I’ll choose a soup from the list below because these are family favorites and quite frankly, we can’t miss with any one of them.  So pick your pot of soup and your team.  Sit back and enjoy the game!

I like so many of your recipes, but I cannot find their nutritional values. Could you include the number of calories and carbs per serving? Thanks.

I’m sorry for not including the nutritional breakdown of each recipe. This requires a great deal more time for each recipe. Although calories are important it’s much more effective and realistic to pay closer attention to serving sizes and obey your signals of fullness, stopping when you feel full. Your body has an amazing built-in system of appetite control which, when obeyed, will help you keep your weight in check. Most of my recipes, except for desserts, are low in fat and sugar with an emphasis on lean protein and fiber-rich carbohydrates. Bariatric-friendly recipes are higher in protein and lower in total carbohydrates. Hope that helps.
