i am only going on my 3rd month of having surgery. I am looking for some good things to eat. theres a lot that I cant have yet. like lettuce, cuccumbers, things with seeds. I am getting tired of chicken I don’t like sea food at all. I still need lots of protein. I need recieps that I could use for protein shakes or things high in protein. thank you mindy

Hi! I have a quick question please. I am 11 weeks out from my sleeve surgery & new to learning how to cook healthy for life. So please bear with me. In the yummy sounding lemon basil chicken, the butter & reduced fat cream cheese is really okay for us post op patients to have who are really wanting to be super strict & lose as much as we can in the first year?

    Thank you,
    Kelley

    • Karen says:

It’s up to you Kelley, but a little flavor and moisture from the butter and cream cheese make the chicken soft and tasty. You can certainly cut down the amounts in the recipe and see if you like it. Adjust it to your preferences. Good luck in your weight loss journey!

Hi Karen, I am getting a bariatric procedure done because of a tumor that was found in my stomach. I wont know until after surgery if i will have 30% of my stomach or if they removed the whole thing. I have 2 weeks to prepare myself whereas most have a few months. My question is that some of the recipes I see posted has Splenda or artificial sweeteners. I am allergic to these sweeteners and I can’t have sugar, what is aneeded alternative to sweeteners besides honey?

    • Karen says:

Michelle: The best thing for bariatric patients is to focus on protein, vegetables and fruits and in that order, so there won’t be much room for sugar in your diet. If you’re looking to “sweeten” water for example, I like to infuse water with sliced cucumber, mint, strawberries, citrus fruits etc. rather than using artificial sweeteners. I add fruits to salads or fruit puree to salad dressings for a sweeter taste. You also might be able to tolerate agave nectar in things like sauces or marinades or dressings. Agave nectar, pure maple syrup, brown rice syrup, honey are all unprocessed forms of sugar, but most bariatric sleeve patients can tolerate a small amount each day. Gastric bypass patients need to be more careful about eating even small amounts of any kind of sugar.

For a sweet hit at the end of the day you can add a little (1 oz) dark chocolate (at least 72% cacoa)–not a lot of sugar and good for the heart!

Hi Karen, I’m three and a half weeks into my RNY and am trying to discover some foods I can eat that don’t make me sick (too much turkey and cheese sticks so far). I am so excited to try some of these recipes. I’ve printed out about a dozen of them and I’ve got plenty more to check out thanks to your awesome selection recipes my family will love too. Thank you so much for everything you do!

    • Karen says:

Kimberly: Thank you for the compliment. I’m glad to provide recipes that will help you along your journey. Let me know how the recipes turn out for you.

    Hi Karen,
I’m a fairly new Registered Dietitian and I’m seeing bariatric patients for a busy practice in NY. I was so happy to stumble upon your website!! I refer everyone to this site and encourage them to try to start enjoying food prep if they don’t already… my patients are so grateful for your list of bariatric-friendly recipes, it’s been a wonderful resource for us.
Thanks for doing such a great job!

    • Karen says:

Hi Megan: What a nice comment. I’m happy the recipes are a good resource for your patients. Our cooking class has been going for six years so we’ve accumulated so many recipes that I’m happy to share. Eating after bariatric surgery doesn’t have to be bland or uninviting. Best wishes as you continue to serve your NY patients. Bariatrics is such a fulfilling experience as folks make the changes needed to live a healthier, happier life. Karen

Hi Julie: Here is the analysis for the Pumpkin Cheesecake Parfaits. Per serving: 159 calories, 16 grams carbohydrates, 7.8 grams fat, 5.4 grams protein. Hope that helps. I love this simple dessert. I served it for a book club meeting in the small mason jars and the ladies loved it!
